Bullets in Microsoft Word are simply small dots that go in front of words, allowing you to create lists of words that stand out on the page. Once you have created a bulleted list, Word then gives you the option to sort that list, or even just a part of that list, alphabetically. The program also allows you to specify which word you want to use to alphabetize the list, if there are multiple words after the bullet point. This can be handy when you are trying to alphabetize a list of names.
1.
Open the Microsoft Word 2010 file that contains your bulleted list.
2.
Click and hold just before the first bullet item to place the cursor there. Drag your mouse down to the last bullet item that you want to alphabetize, then release the button.
3.
Select the 'Home' tab at the top of the screen, then click the 'Sort' button in the Paragraph area of the ribbon. The button has the image of a down arrow with an 'A' and 'Z' next to it. The Sort Text window will appear.
4.
Click the 'Options' button if you want to sort by a manner other then the first letter of the first word. Click the radio button next to 'Other' and place a space in the text box next to this option. If your words are separated by a comma instead of a space, just click the radio button next to 'Commas.' Click 'OK' to close the Sort Options window.
5.
Select the drop-down field under 'Sort By' and choose how you want to sort the list. The default setting of 'Paragraphs' will sort by the first word in each list, but you can also specify sorting by another word by choosing 'Word 2,' 'Word 3,' etc., from the drop-down menu. If you are sorting numbers or dates, instead of words, click the drop-down menu next to 'Type' and choose either of those options from the menu.
6.
Click the radio button next to 'Ascending' or 'Descending,' depending on the order you want to use. Click 'OK' and your list will be alphabetized.
Warning
- If your bulleted list has multiple levels, the sort will alphabetize each selected item regardless of the level it is on, which could change the organization of your list.
