The AO I bought new back in 1990 didn't have an issue with off-spec holes. It's issue was being built with parts that should've been rejected but weren't. The extractor was literally bent like a banana, but instead of throwing it away the assembly worker ground a taper on it and literally hammered it in (I know that for a fact because it required a long metal rod and a hammer to get it back out). The barrel had deep gouges in the chamber causing failures to feed, and that was only discovered after I finally took a Dremel to the feed ramp just to allow a cartridge to make it all the way into the chamber. There was more, but I'll end it here. In all my years of being around 1911s I'd never seen a pistol put together as badly as that one.
To answer your question, for $250 you may luck out and get one that was assembled by somebody who actually cared. If not, like you said you're not out too much, and for a small investment in parts you may be able to get it working. If nothing else you can throw a .22 upper on it and have a decent plinker.

Jan 14, 2017 Brief description of some changes to a very good pistol at a great price point. Link to me shooting it here.
